A tuna once sold for $1.8 million, but you can get cans of tuna fish for less than $2 at the grocery store. So, what's the difference? Bluefin tuna can be very expensive depending on where you buy it and which part of the fish you are eating. We spoke with the chef at Shoji in New York, Derek Wilcox, to find out why the fish is so expensive.

You mean approx 126 Million Indian Rupee for a fish? We can feed around a million needy people at this price. World would have been a better place if there was no such hugh income distribution difference between the rich & poor.

Why Boston tuna is so much cheaper because us fisherman don't know how to catch tuna properly. Japanese fisherman only damage the head of tuna. US would damage the Toro part and it will make the tuna worthless.

Japanese tuna is best because the Japanese do not attack the most valuable part of the flesh. America's are careless with their treatment of their product. America needs to lift it's game

So I’m irresponsible for eating bluefin I caught Labor Day in the pacific? Not everyone can afford a Japanese blue fin, and paying $200 a lb is irresponsible to me.

Pacific bluefin is farmed in South Australia. Port Lincoln was built by it. Huge pens out in the southern ocean.

I know tuna is tasty, but PLEASE do not buy bluefin tuna. Atlantic, Pacific, wherever. All the populations are at serious risk, with the Atlantic starting to head into the same decline the Pacific has already faced. These are some of the most majestic fish in our oceans and it would be a serious shame to see them go extinct.

The tuna graduated from Harvard law school, got married to his high school sweetheart, they had 3 children, his life savings and property ownership was far above and beyond anything previous generations had even seen, so it’s safe to say this “tuna had a good life”. Right up to him being caught and sold to the highest bidder.

Too many hands, I call bullshit, Bluefin migrate with the current, Japan buys Bluefin from the US, why do that of your bluefin is the best? Its because your validating the high price. The fat content is measured before shipped to Japan that is how they are priced before getting to the auction house. A 265 lb Bluefin from the US to Japan can run around 15,500 yen. The bluefin numbers are on the decline which may contribute to the hefty price tag.
